Kats football drop game to Milford

The Erie Community College football team was defeated 34-28 Saturday evening by Milford Academy in New Berlin, NY.

The Kats dropped their first road contest of the season to fall 4-5 overall with one game remaining in the season next Saturday at Georgia Military.

Erie got off to a good start when they converted a Falcon fumble in the first quarter.  The Kats took over at the Milford 18-yard line and scored the first points of the game when David Barry (Cleveland, OH/Warrensville) hit Patrick Murphy (Pittsburgh, PA/Brashear) with a 4-yard scoring pass.

Milford tied the game with 13:56 left in the second quarter when Mathew Brown returned his fourth punt of the season for a touchdown from 44-yards out.  The ensuing PAT tied the game at 7-7.

Erie retook the lead after the Milford score when Adrian Jackson (Ruston, LA/Ruston) returned the kickoff to the Falcons 43-yard line. Nine plays and 4:46 later, Erie was on the board again on a one-yard touchdown run from Brian Fowler (Geneva/Geneva).  The snap on the PAT was bad and Nick Adrian (Hamburg/Frontier) picked it up and tossed it to a waiting Adrian Barboza (Hyannis, MA/Barnstable) for the two-point conversion and a 15-7 lead.

After a missed field goal by Milford, Erie took over and drove down the field to the Falcons 19-yard line when Barry was picked off in the end zone.  Milford scored three plays later when Cameron Artis-Payne scored on an 18-yard run with 43 seconds left in the first half to pull Milford within a point at 15-14.  The drive was highlighted by a 59-yard run by Artis-Payne.

The third quarter was not kind to the Kats as the Falcons took the second half kickoff and scored in five plays when Artis-Payne scored his second touchdown of the game, this one from three yards.

The Kats were further damaged when they fumbled the subsequent kickoff to Milford.  Milford took advantage and scored just 1:34 later to take a 28-15 lead.

After an Erie three-and-out, Brown killed the Kats again when he returned the punt 59-yards to the 15-yard line.  They scored on the next play when quarterback Jawad Yatim found Will Figueroa in the end zone for an apparent commanding lead 34-15.

In the fourth quarter, Erie staged a comeback of their own, led by the passing of David Barry.  He led them on an 85-yard drive that concluded with a one-yard touchdown run by Murphy. The key play on the drive was a 39-yard pass to Bryan Phelan (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).

Barry and the Kats seemed to be in business again when Eric Camper (Yazoo City, MS/Yazoo City) recovered a fumble at midfield.  The drive stalled when Barry was intercepted for the second time at the Milford five-yard line.

Milford was held by the Erie defense and Barry again led the Kats down the field to a score when he hit Ernest Pitts (Akron, OH/Buchtel) with a two-yard pass.  The ensuing PAT snap was botched to make the score 34-28 with 2:33 remaining in the game.

With only one timeout remaining, the team was forced to try an onside kick which was recovered by Milford.  They were able to run out the remaining time to hold on for the victory.

The Erie offense held the advantage in total yards 336-269 and in first downs 19-13 but the Kats was unable to contain Artis-Payne who rushed for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

On the individual side, Barry broke Erie single-game records for attempts, completions, and passing yards.  He finished 23-43 for 243 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Brian Fowler, playing with a bad hip, finished with 77 yards all-purpose yards (54 receiving, 23 rushing) and his team-leading 13th touchdown of the season.  He needs 34 yards next week to become the second player ever with 1,000 yards rushing in a season.

Patrick Murphy finished with a season-high six receptions for 62 yards with two total touchdowns.

On the defensive side, converted tight end Marquis Davis (Buffalo/McKinley) continued to impress, leading the team with 10 tackles (eight solo), two tackles for loss, one sack, and one fumble recovery.

The team will conclude their 2008 season when they travel to Milledgeville, Georgia to take on the 5th-ranked Bulldogs.
