Kats golf team fourth at Thruway Classic
The Erie Community College men’s golf team finished fourth at the First Annual Roberts Wesleyan Thruway Classic held October 3 at Stafford Country Club.

The tournament, reduced to an 18-hole event due to rain on Friday, featured six squads.

Erie shot a 324 to finish 12 shots behind Daemen College who finished at 312 on the par 72 layout. The team did finish just four shots behind runner-up SUNY-Delhi who shot 320.

Jim Merriman (South Wales/East Aurora) led the team with a 79 to tie for fourth place. Kyle Harman (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) finished tied for sixth with an 80 and Alex Godfrey (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) tied for ninth with an 81.

Rounding out the Erie team was Blake Ihrig (Fredonia/Fredonia) with 84 and Ryan Winkowski (Lancaster/Lancaster) with 89.

Team results: Daemen College-312, 2. SUNY-Delhi- 320, 3. Roberts Wesleyan “A”- 323, 4. Erie- 324, 5. SUNY-Delhi “B”- 378, 6. Roberts Wesleyan “B”- 399.

Golf team finishes sixth at Medaille Invitational

The Erie Community College golf team finished sixth in an eight-team field at the Second annual Medaille College Invitational on Saturday at Glen Oaks Golf Course.

The Kats, coming off two-straight wins to open the 2009 fall season, could not get on track on the gloomy and rainy day at the East Amherst course.

Erie’s total of 339 was 44 shots behind the winning score from Daemen College who shot an impressive 295.  Penn State-Behrend finished second with a 317 and Pitt-Bradford third with a 324.  The host school finished fourth with 333.

La Roche College finished in fifth, just ahead of Erie with a 338.  Hilbert College and D’Youville rounded out the field in seventh and eighth place respectively.

Individually, the Kats were led by freshman Kyle Harman (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) with an 82.

The team will next be in action when they travel to Rochester for the Roberts Wesleyan Thruway Series Classic, held at Stafford Country Club October 2-3.

ECC golf wins ECC Invitational

The Erie Community men’s golf team claimed their second-straight golf tournament on September 23 in their own Invitational, held at Harvest Hill golf course.

The Kats tied for the top spot with Daemen College at 320 but won based on the NCAA tie-breaker which includes the fifth player.

The Kats were led by Jim Merriman (South Wales/East Aurora) who claimed medalist honors for the second-straight tournament with a five-over 77.  Kyle Harman (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) was second on the team with an 80.

Rounding out the Kats scoring was Alex Godfrey (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) 81, Ryan Winkowski (Lancaster/Lancaster) 82, and Blake Ihrig (Fredonia/Fredonia) 82.

Daemen College’s Tom Romano was the only other player to break 80, shooting a 79.

Following Erie and Daemen at 320 were Medaille College (342), Hilbert College (368), and D’Youville College (369).

Erie golf team wins D’Youville Invitational

The Erie Community College men’s golf team won their first tournament of the 2009 fall season, winning the D’Youville College Invitational at Springville Country Club on September 16.

The Kats won the tournament with a team score of 329, just four shots ahead of Medaille College who finished second with 333. Hilbert and D’Youville finished with 354 and 379 to finish third and fourth respectively.

On the individual side, sophomore Jim Merriman (South Wales/East Aurora) was the tournament medalist with a three-over 74. His round included a one-under 34 on the back nine. He had five birdies on the day.

Rounding out the members of the Erie team scoring was: Kyle Harman (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) 84, Ryan Winkowski (Lancaster/Lancaster) 84, Andrew Faulring (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) 87, and Dave Taylor (Buffalo/Timon-St. Jude) 89.

Sophomore Blake Ihrig (Fredonia/Fredonia) was the only other player to break 80, shooting a 79. He competed in only the individual portion of the tournament. Mike Krywcum (Buffalo/St. Joes) and Alex Godfrey (North Tonawanda/North Tonawanda) each shot 81 competing in the individual portion.

The team will next be in action on Wednesday September 26 at Harvest Hill golf course when they host their fall invitational.
