
Men’s basketball wins Cole’s/Brennan’s Kickoff Tournament
The Erie Community College men’s basketball team turned a 35-34 deficit at halftime into a 76-68 victory in the championship game of their Cole’s/Brennan’s Kickoff tournament on Sunday November 8.
Trailing by five points with 5:38 left in the game, Jeffrey Arzu hit a key three-pointer to cut the lead to 65-63 and God’s Gift Achiuwa grabbed a rebound and was fouled at the other end of the floor. He hit the two ensuing free throws to tie the game. The tie was the 11th of the game.
Erie then took the lead and built it to 11 points over the last three minutes of the game thanks to the dependable foul shooting of Arzu who was 5-6 in the last minute.
Arzu ended as the game’s high scorer with 18 points. He also had six rebounds, four assists and four steals and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Tola Lawal ended the game with 17 points and eight rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team along with teammate God’s Gift Achiuwa who had 15 points and 13 rebounds in the championship game.
The team is off until November 14 when the travel to Utica to play Mohawk Valley Community College.
