Two Erie Kats recognized on All-Conference Softball Team

Erie Community College sophomore third baseman Alyssa Schneider (Lockport/Lockport High School) and freshman outfielder Belinda Hernon (Cleveland, OH/Warren Harding High School) were each recognized at Second Team All-Western New York Athletic Conference performers for their play on the softball field in 2009.

Hernon, who missed the first 10 games due to an injury, hit a team-leading .404 (19-for-47) with 11 RBI. She scored 11 runs and stole seven bases.

Schneider had a team-high 33 hits, 22 runs and a .398 batting average. She had seven doubles, a home run, drove in 15 runs and stole eight bases. In here two-year career at Erie, Schneider posted a .404 (57-for-141) batting average.

Erie finished the 2009 campaign with a 7-21 record.

Softball Sweeps Alfred
 
The Erie Community College (4-16) softball team was trailing entering the seventh inning of both games of a doubleheader at Alfred State Saturday, but managed to come home with a doubleheader sweep of the Pioneers. Erie won the opener 8-7 and rallied for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

The Kats trailed 7-6 entering the seventh inning of the opener before Alyssa Schneider singled in Carolyn Sickau with one out to tie the contest. Erie then received an RBI single from Abbey Krier in the ninth inning for the winning run.

Schneider finished the contest three-for-five with a double and three RBI. Chloe Smith was three-for-four at the plate and Kristin Ball was two-for-three with an RBI.

Sickau allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in eight innings to pick up the win in the circle. She struck out a career-high nine batters.

In the second game, Erie rallied for three runs in the seventh inning for the win. Belinda Hernon was two-for-three with two RBI. Krier and Tiffany Johnson also had RBI singles.

Sickau allowed three earned runs and eight hits in the nightcap. She struck out six and walked one.

Softball drops doubleheader at Broome

The Erie Community College softball team suffered a pair of losses at Broome Community College Sunday to start the season. Broome won the opener, 11-3, and took the nightcap, 5-4 in eight innings.

Erie had the lead in both games but was unable to hold it.

In the opener, Erie led 3-2 after two innings but Broome scored two runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth to seal the win. Tiffany Johnson, Kristin Ball and Alyssa Schneider each had doubles in the game for the Kats.

Erie held a 4-2 advantage after three innings of the second game. Broome scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game and plated the winner in the bottom of the eighth. Schneider, who allowed eight hits in 7.1 innings of work as the Erie pitcher, also was two-for-four with a double at the plate. Sam Gray had two hits and two RBI.
