Kats swimming sweeps Genesee

The Erie Community College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Genesee Community College Wednesday evening in Buffalo. The men won 82-38 and women were victorious 85-46.

Freshmen Samantha Gonter and Sara Montgomery were individual double winners for the women’s team. Gonter won the 50-yard freestyle in 27.62 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.97. Montgomery won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:35.98 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.23.

Other winners for the Erie women were Caitlin Schwinge in the 200-yard freestyle (2:13.73) and Rachelle Schmidt in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.75).

Freshman Ryan Tomporowski and sophomore Tom Kasprzyk each won two individual events for the Erie men’s team. Tomporowski won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:03.74 and the 100-yard freestyle in 56.24. Kasprzyk won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:26.67 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.80.

Also winning for Erie was freshman Otuken Gildo in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:15.50.

Women’s swimming captures Genesee Invitational

The Erie Community College women’s swimming and diving team broke two school records en route to taking first place out of six schools at the Genesee Invitational Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the men finished third on the day.

The Lady Kats broke school records in their first two events of the day. Freshmen Samantha Gonter, Rachelle Schmitt, Sarah Montgomery and Caitlin Schwinge opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay in 2:03.60.

Schwinge then put her name in the school record book again by capturing the 1,000-yard freestyle in 12:13.28. Schwinge also won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:59.88 and teamed with Jennifer Praczkajlo, Montgomery and Gonter to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:55.11.

Also picking up individual wins for Erie were Gonter in the 50-yard freestyle (27:51), Montgomery in the 100-yard butterfly (1:11.38) and Schmitt in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.41).

Sophomore Tom Kasprzyk was a double winner for the Erie men. He captured the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:12.57 and won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:28.65.

Erie’s women finished with 199 points, outdistancing second place SUNY Delhi by 32 points. The men had 164 points, which was 77.5 points behind invitational winner Herkimer County Community College.

Erie returns to action on November 18 when it hosts Genesee in a dual meet at 6 p.m.
