The following two generic course descriptions are available to each department listed on this page.

Department Prefix 888 (Course Name) 1-6 cr. hrs.

Designates a course taken at another institution and accepted for transfer credit by the department. This course number is used whenever no comparable course exists in the college catalog. This course number may appear more than once on a student transcript.

Department Prefix 998 (Course Name) Variable Credit

Designates a new course offered by the department which is being evaluated as to the appropriateness of the course to the major and/or the interest of students in enrolling in this particular topic. This course number may appear more than once on a student transcript.

AS-180
ASTRONOMY
A one-semester course designed to acquaint the student with the solar system and selected topics from studies of the stars and nebulae. Topics include the beginnings of astronomy, ptolemy to Newton, earth and moon system, tools and methods of the astronomer, planets and satellites, comets and meteors, stars, stellar systems, galaxies and cosmology. Concurrent registration in AS 181 required. F/S (C, N, S)

LAB. FOR AS180
The laboratory will include experiments designed to reinforce the astromical principles covered in lectures and will give students training in data analysis and report writing. To be taken concurrently with AS 180. F/S (C, N, S)
 
AS-182
STELLAR ASTRONOMY
A one-semester course designed to serve as a follow-up to AS 180-181. Topics concerning stars and systems of stars will be discussed in much greater depth than in the previous course. The subject matter includes the use of star charts, the description of equipment used in observing the universe, a discussion of the principles developed by Kepler, Newton, and Einstein, the study of the physical characteristics of stars, the evolution and demise of stars, and galaxies and other systems of stars. Prerequisites: completion of AS 180 & AS 181 and/or participation in the Honors Program or permission of the instructor. To be offered every other semester. (C)
