Orientation to Graphics
For those thinking about a career in graphic design, this course provides the student with basic skills and concepts. Emphasis on the history, terminology, sequencing used in the production of traditional printed information and the components of the specialized Macintosh equipment. Students will be given hands-on projects that reinforce the importance of typography, the principles and elements of design and layout, and the graphics measuring systems.Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 102, Concurrent registration not required for Web Page Design Certificate Program. PUBLISHING I BASICS
MacIntosh basics will be emphasized as a graphic design tool. Proper use of current graphics software. This will be integrated with the principles and elements of design in the production of multiple professional quality layouts for inclusion in a portfolio. Class sessions include visual presentations, hands-on tutorials and class critiques of major projects. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 101. ELECTRONIC IMAGING I
An introductory course of study, working with a computer application to create original line copy, and then turn the copy into film negatives for the express purpose of making plates for a lithographic press and printing. Different styles of imposition (stripping) will be introduced to produce black and white and multicolored printing. Historical significants will include the use of a process camera for film exposure and tray processing of film will precede more current methods as image setting films to a RIP device. F (S)

Intro Lithographic Press/Bindery
Introduction to the background, components, and principles of offset lithography. Included will be the principles of plate preparation, paper handling, and ink as well as related materials and basic bindery equipment including cutter operation and components, padding, and drill press operation. Emphasis will focus on safety. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 105. F (S)

LITHOGRAPHIC PRESS I
Introduction to the hands-on operation of various duplicator presses, platemaking, paper handling, ink and basic bindery methods. Included will be instruction in safety, maintenance, make ready, production, and quality control. The course objective is to produce well-printed single and multi-colored jobs for inclusion in a portfolio. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 104. F (S)

CREATE WITH FREEHAND
Introductory course to the principles of graphic design using Macromedia Freehand and its relationship to layout, typography, and print production. Basic concepts involved in developing an advertising campaign from concept to presentation, historical trends and effects on design, the role of the art director, customer and production team, the specific problems of exporting work to other programs, and the relationship the job must have to the printing process will be explored. The course objective is to have students develop a variety of multi-colored visual projects that emphasize creativity and problem solving for inclusion in a portfolio. F (S)

GRAPHIC ARTS OVERVIEW
An advanced course in the principles and methods used in typography and layout including folds, copyfitting as well as emphasis on paper, paper-making, paper sizes, specifications, and classifications as a major component of the printed job. Specific requirements for flat pieces, folds, columns, grids, and various binding methods will be discussed. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 121. S (S)

PUBLISH WITH INDESIGN
The advanced theory and operation of In- Design as a page assembly and layout program for print media. Students will be involved in hands-on lab projects as well as creating free-hand designs for a variety of products including the preparation and output of a color proof for a multi-colored brochure. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 120. S (S)

ELECTRONIC IMAGING II
A more advanced course of study that focuses on computer generated halftones. Emphasis will be on methods used and the appearance on different printing surfaces from various printing processes. Special effect halftones will be introdued to students and image set to film, then stripped and plated for reproduction on a high speed lithographic printing press. Students will also study methods of correct page sequence (page positioning) for low and high numbered signatures. Various imposition considerations will be created by students. S (S)

ADVANCED PRESS/BINDERY
A continuation of the theory of operating lithographic sheet-fed presses including make ready, feeder, and delivery procedures. Concepts of plate and blanket handling, ph factors, dampening/ ink systems, registering and fitting, paper considerations and press problem-solving for quality control will be covered. The comparison of various other printing processes will be included along with safety considerations. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 124. S (S)

LITHOGRAPHIC PRESS II
Advanced procedures in operating duplicator presses will be covered including multi-colored registration, ph measuring, ink mixing, press and paper problem solving, as well as plate developing and troubleshooting procedures. The course objective is to produce well-registered, multi-colored jobs on a variety of paper substratesfor inclusion in a portfolio. Prerequisite: Concurrent registration in GA 123. S (S)

CREATE WITH ILLUSTRATOR
The definition and creation of object-oriented vector graphics will be the focus of this course as well as the exploration of the role of an illustrator. Students will learn how to master basic techniques of creating an original piece of digital art in Adobe Illustrator. Studies in advertising along with the integration of creative copy, the use of typography and creative problem solving will be emphasized. The program Streamline will be used to show a relationship to production efficiency required in the printing industry. The course objective is to have students develop a variety of multi-colored visual projects that emphasize creativity and problem solving for inclusion in a portfolio. S (S)

PUBLISH WITH QUARK XPRESS
The theory and hands-on operation of a page assembly program including basic and advanced functions will be covered using QuarkXPress. The concepts of copyright print trade laws and page anatomy will be included as well as the basics of newsletter design. The course objective will be to write, design and execute a multi-colored newsletter layout with multiple columns using QuarkXPress that can output to a PostScript device and be included in a portfolio. PHOTOSHOP 1
This course of study introduces the student to the uses of the Photoshop toolbox, menu and submenu items/functions, the layers palette, color palette, history palette etc. Throughout the semester the students will gain application knowledge from practical tutorial and homework exercises. F (S)

ELECTONIC IMAGING 111
Students will work on outputting calibration tests to pin-point exact film exposures, and single- and two-color text and graphics jobs to film on an imagesetter. The basic concepts of trapping, spreads, and chokes will be covered along with preparing masks and properly-angled percentage screen carriers for spot color printing. Students will finalize and confirm the accuracy of their stripping by proofing the work with color overlay proofs. F (S)

LITHOGRAPHIC PRESS 111
Introduction to the hands-on operation, components and systems of a sheet-fed press and folder. Procedures and techniques including use of a micrometer, blanket handling, and packing, roller settings and adjustments, registering, specific press problems and troubleshooting will be covered. Also included will be color principles, densitometry operation and color bars as well as a variety of imposition methods. The course objective is to provide experience in the set-up, make ready, registration and production of a variety of single, duo-tone, and multicolored jobs on the press including folder operations for inclusion in a portfolio. PUBLISHING IV WEB BASICS
Introduction to the basics of HTML for creating a basic web site. The site will tie into an identity package where students will create linear as well as digital output for a variety of products using the same logo: letterhead, business card, envelope, memo pad, resume and invoice.The principles of a professional proofreading method for quality control will be emphasized. Preparation and production of a professional identity package in both digital and linear format for inclusion in a portfolio will be the course objective. PHOTOSHOP II
More advanced knowledge of Photoshop will be gained with the use of Channels to create selections, adjust the tonal range of a picture by assigning black and white points, use actions and styles to re-create a vector graphic, learn about slices and rollovers in Image-Ready as well as to create animations and to make key frames. ELECTRONIC IMAGING IV
Advanced procedures of stripping film for a variety of more complex layout formats will be covered. Color theory and correction as it pertains to color separation including the additive and subtractive systems, under color removal, and grey component removal. The pagination, stripping, and proofing of a multiple page signature in color as well as its potential output to an imagesetter will be the course objective. S (S)

The Internship experience is designed to provide realistic hands-on training to students in some or all the techniques utilized in the areas of pre-press, press, digital output and/or bindery operations as they relate to the printing industry.

An introductory class in the basics of multimedia authoring and development for use with web pages, multimedia CD ROMs, etc. Students will use the software program and standard authoring tools incorporating sound, still, and moving images for multimedia output. S (S)

Web Page Design With Dream Weaver
An overview of the rules and regulations of the interent. Creation of an interactive webpage utilizing Macromedia Dreamweaver software.
