Humanities | | | | SP-100 | | LIT IN TRANSLATION | | This course has a dual purpose: 1) to introduce the student to works originally written in Spanish, and available in English; 2) to give the student a glimpse of what is involved in translating, by doing some translations under the direction of the instructor. Prerequisite: Good background in Spanish (a minimum of three years of language study in high school). This prerequisite may be waived by the instructor under special circumstances for a native speaker. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-101 | | BEGINNG CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH | | This course is designed to permit the student to acquire a practical oral proficiency in Spanish, based on a simplified approach to grammar and the exploration and mastery of any technical vocabulary required by the students career. Liberal Arts students note: this course cannot be expected to satisfy any language requirements for a B.A. or a B.S. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-110 | | ELEMENTARY SPANISH I | | For students with little or no exposure to the language. Comprehension of basic grammar principles is stressed, along with aural comprehension and oral expression. Writing of simple Spanish sentences is done from the beginning. Students go to the Language Laboratory one hour weekly (instructor-monitored) and one or more individual laboratory attendances are required. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-111 | | ELEM SPANISH II | | Continuation of SP 110. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-112 | | INTERMED SPANISH I | | The course is a review of grammar and an initiation in the reading of easy Spanish texts. Students will be asked to prepare written and oral reports on their readings. The aim of the course is to expand the vocabulary beyond the basic level into the usage of current idiomatic expressions and to establish Spanish grammar on solid grounds. The student will go to the language laboratory one hour weekly to improve his or her aural comprehension. Students with two or more years will be given a proficiency test to ascertain their level. Prerequisites: SP 110/111, or the equivalent. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-113 | | INTERMED SPANISH II | | Continuation of SP 112. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-210 | | SPANISH COMP I | | Based on varied readings, the course is aimed at raising the level of proficiency in oral and written expression. Topics, directly or indirectly suggested by the readings done in the course, will be given for discussion by the students. These topics will be given as written assignments either individually or collectively. Prerequisite: SP 112-113 or by score on a proficiency test. (C, N, S) (Cycling) | | | | SP-211 | | SPANISH COMP.
