Bowling Sweeps Region III Championships!
The Erie bowling program swept the Region III Championships as both the men's and women's teams were crowned champs at Airport Lanes this weekend.
"The men's and women's programs collectively had a great day on the lanes. The two team regional championships are the most important hardware achieved. However, the other event successes the players had (doubles, singles and all events) are further testaments to the work they've put in all year long," said Head Coach David Zajac.
On the women's side, in addition to being team champions, Sophomore Haley Benkelman was the singles champion and bowled to a second place All Events finish. Sophomores Lydia Murphy and Maura Noonan finished first in doubles while Megan Walker and Benkelman finished second. Murphy, Noonan and Benkleman were named to the All Region team.
For the men, sophomore Lane Marlatt took top honors as the men's singles champion and All Event champion. Marlett bowled 880 pins to finish ahead of teammate Zachary Spengler who finished second.
The freshman duo of Alex Sandford and Zack Budzynski took home the doubles title while Marlett, Spengler and Budzynski were named to the All Region team.
"The men's team coming off back-to-back event victories and the women's team riding the strong showings at the last two events, are just what we as coaches could hope for. We have a handful of practices left until both teams hit the lanes to in their quest to hoist the NJCAA National Championship Trophy."
The teams will return to Airport Lanes February 27-March 1st to compete in the NJCAA Championships.
