Let’s Shed Some Light – Mercury Lamps
Mercury-containing fluorescent lamps are defined as a hazardous waste by the EPA.
Mercury is the number-one ranking of the EPA's list of the 19 most persistent, bio-accumulative,
and toxic metals targeted for control and eventual elimination. It is the most frequent
cause of fish advisories in the United States, represented in 60% of all water bodies
with advisories. Mercury-containing lamps have to be properly discarded to avoid the
risk of releasing mercury into the environment.
EPA strongly recommends recycling compact fluorescent lamps, fluorescent bulbs and
other bulbs that contain mercury, and all other household hazardous wastes rather
than disposing of them in regular household trash.
