Ice Hockey defeats Saint John Fisher

The Erie Community College (6-0) ice hockey team exploded for seven second-period goals and came away with a 12-3 win over Saint John Fisher College Saturday afternoon in Cheektowaga.

Freshman Ryan Vertino led the way for the Kats with three goals. Sophomore Dan Wendt had two goals and three assists and sophomore Mike Krywcum finished with four assists. Freshman Todd Lyness also finished with two goals.

Freshman netminder Alex Olszewski was making his first start and stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced to earn the victory.

Erie returns home Saturday, November 21 when it hosts the University of Rochester at 3:15 p.m.

Kats Ice Hockey wins fifth-straight to open season

The Erie Community College (5-0) ice hockey team scored three unanswered power play goals over the final 7:13 of the game and came away with a 6-3 win over John Carroll University this afternoon in Cheektowaga.

Six different players lit the lamp for Erie. The Kats stormed out of the gate to open a 2-0 early lead. Sophomore Tom Smith scored just 1:35 into the game off an assist from Todd Lyness and Paul Brown. Kyle Chase then gave the Kats a two-goal lead just 44 seconds later off an assist from Ryan Vertino.

John Carroll responded by cutting the lead in half with 3:13 remaining in the opening period and then tied the game halfway through the second period.

Two minutes later, Dan Wendt scored the first of four Erie power play goals to put the Kats back on top.

After John Carroll tied the game early in the third period, Erie received power play goals from Brown, Vertino and Lyness to put the game away.

The Kats are off until next Saturday, November 14 when they host Saint John Fisher College at 3:15 p.m.

Kats sweep Morris

The Erie Community College (4-0) ice hockey team won a pair of games at County College of Morris over the weekend. Erie won Saturday’s game 9-0 and was a 15-0 winner on Sunday.

Eleven different players scored for Erie against the Titans.

On Saturday, the Kats held a 45-9 shot advantage. Freshman Paul Brown led the way with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Dan Wendt finished with two goals and an assists. Also scoring for the Kats were Ryan Bauer, Michael Pratt, Todd Lyness, Kyle Chase and Ryan Vertino.

Wendt finished with two goals and two assists on Sunday while Brown finished with a goal and four assists. Lyness, Nicholas Friol, Theo Alger and Michael Krywcum all had two goals apiece.

All three goalies played for Erie over the weekend. Bryan Kalczynski made 10 saves in 60 minutes, Robert Corbett stopped four shots in 20 minutes and Alex Olszewski made six saves in 40 minutes.

Erie will play its home opener this Saturday, November 7 when it hosts John Carroll University at 3:15 p.m.

Hockey opens season with a pair of wins

The Erie Community College (2-0) ice hockey team began the 2009-10 campaign with a 7-2 win at Broome Community College last Saturday. Erie then followed it up the next day with a 12-1 win at Mohawk Valley Community College.

In the opener, Erie raced out to a 4-0 lead after one period on the strength of three goals by sophomore Dan Wendt. Freshman Todd Lyness added two goals in the game and freshman Ryan Vertino and sophomore Dan Mocarski had a goal apiece. Sophomore Thomas Smith finished the game with four assists.

Sophomore goaltender Bryan Kalczynski stopped 29 of the 31 shots he face to get the win.

In Sunday’s game, Erie exploded for eight goals in the second period to pull away from Mohawk Valley. Nine different players lit the lamp for the Kats. Vertino, freshman Nick Friol and sophomore Theo Alger each netted two goals. Also scoring for the Kats were Ryan Bauer, Justin Mayberry, Phil DiFrancisco, Paul Brown, Hagop Otabachian and Wendt.

Kalczynski stopped all 14 shots he faced in 50 minutes of work.

Erie returns to action next Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 when it visits County College of Morris (1-1) for a two-game set.
