Placement Testing

  • About the Placement Test

Placement testing is required of all entering full and part-time matriculated students and those entering a certificate program, unless they have been waived from the placement test. Erie Community College administers the ACCUPLACER computer-based placement test to students prior to their enrollment in college classes. The entire test takes approximately two (2) hours to complete.  The ESL ACCUPLACER for students whose dominant language is not English may be slightly longer due to the additional tests.

The following tests are administered in ACCUPLACER for English speaking students:

    • Elementary Algebra, Arithmetic, Reading Comprehension (untimed, multiple choice questions)
    • WritePlacer (essay of 300+ words timed allowed 60 minutes)

The following tests are administer to ESL (English as a Second Language) students or students who are dominant in a language other than English:

    • Elementary Algebra, Arithmetic
    • ESL Reading Skills
    • ESL Language Use
    • ESL Sentence Meaning and ESL Listening (untimed multiple choice questions)
    • ESL WritePlacer (essay of 300+ words timed at 40 minutes)

No appointment is required. Students should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to noted start time. Photo ID is required and you must know your student ID number (found on your acceptance letter).
